Joyce Meyer teaches that setting and holding on to faulty expectations are a major source of unhappiness in life. She emphasizes that a person's joy is their own responsibility and that seeking perfection from others is a sure fire path to frustration.

Release control of others' actions. Meyer says people often get upset with others for not meeting uncommunicated expectations. This is particularly common in relationships where, for example, a woman may expect her husband to instinctively understand what she needs. She stresses that people are flawed, and expecting perfection from anyone but Jesus will lead to disappointment.
